These aren't anything magical, just some easy tips for panic attacks that can help you ride out attacks when they happen without having to go to the emergency room.
Tip #1- Remember, Panic Attacks Aren't Dangerous
This is the most important of all the tips I've included. I know that when you're in the middle of an attack it can seem life threatening. You feel like you're going to die. That's why most people in end up in the ER. Don't be fooled though, a panic attack can't hurt you.
A panic attack is just an overreaction. Your body is overreacting to the stress that it feels. Once you can identify that a panic attack is happening, try to remind yourself that this panic attack can't hurt or harm you in any way.
Tip #2- Panic Attacks Only Last a Few Minutes
When you're in the middle of an attack, it seems like time stands still, but most panic attacks are over within 5 minutes. If you can force yourself to wait 5 minutes before you consider going to the hospital, you'll probably just be able to ride out the attack and be fine.
Now it's important to remember to go to the hospital if you REALLY think you're having a heart attack. However, most people who experience regular panic attacks can tell the difference by now.
Tip #3- Have a Designated Helper
Make sure that you get an understanding friend to be your panic attack support. It's important to have someone you can go to, or call when an attack starts. It's hard to remember that a panic attack can't hurt you when you're having one. It feels real and it feels important.
Have someone you can go to who will talk you through it. It can be really helpful to have a handle to hold while the attack happens. This person can keep you grounded and watch over you for the few minutes the attack will last.
Tips #4- Have A Positive Trigger
There's a really simple technique that can help defuse panic attacks that are already happening. It's a little bit of NLP that I learned a few years back that really works wonders.
